DIY Solar Pool Heater Black Hose: How to Make Your Heater

Materials You’ll Need

You will need the following materials to make a homemade pool heater.

  • A black garden hose (500 feet)
  • 4 x 8 sheet of plywood (treated)
  • A pack of 150 zip ties
  • A drill

You can buy the plywood from your local hardware while the rest of the material can be found online. The zip ties will be used to hold the garden hose on the plywood – you will need to drill the board.

Process of Making the Heater

Managing the hose is the hardest part of creating a heater. You need to be careful to ensure that it doesn’t get tangled, kinked, and twisted.

The Creation

In terms of creation, start from the outside of the wood towards the edges (ensure that you keep the turns tight). If you do it the right way, you won’t need to change the position of the ties and the drilled holes.

You will need one or two ties on the short end and two to four on the long side. Note that it can take a lot of hours to lay the hose the right way on the plywood – at least 8-hour.

The Connection

You then connect the completed system to your pool filter so that clean water can pass via the DIY solar pool heater as it returns to the facility. The reasoning behind this is to warm the filtered water.

You might need a water pump if you are not using a filter to ensure that the water passes via the heater. Alternatively, you can connect the system between your pool and faucet to warm the water when your pool is getting filled.

How the Black Hose Heater Works

Because the black color absorbs heat from the sun, your homemade heater will take the warmth from the sun and transfer it to the water in the piping. The bigger the hose you use, the hotter the water will become.

However, you should note that more hose means you need a stronger water pump or pool filter to push the water.

How Effective is the System?

When the water passes via the solar pool heater black hose, it will get sweltering, but it will begin to cool when it returns to your pool. That doesn’t mean that your system isn’t working since the water will continue to pass via the heater, and that will increase the temperature.

In Conclusion

You don’t need to buy an expensive pool heater that will increase the cost of operation when you can easily make your heater at home. Look for the right material and follow the guide above to ensure that you made the best DIY solar pool heater black hose.
