Biggest almond harvest ever...

19 February, 2015

This is the biggest almond harvest I have ever had:

Impressive, isn't it.

Not.

The almond tree is now about two years old. Last year it set one solitary fruit, which dropped early. This year it set around 15 fruit, but this is all that made it to almond adulthood.

It's not quite the spectacular almond harvest I have been envisioning (like these people's) but it is getting there.

Now I just need to let them dry. And try not to eat them all in one go.

  1. At least it is something. Most fruit trees (and really almonds are fruit trees, you just eat the seed) don't produce for at least 3-5 years. Maybe next year you will get a decent harvest.

    1. True. I hope this is only the beginning. But you always treasure those first fruit from any tree, even if it's only four.

  2. That's so funny - reminds me of our first cherry "harvest" where my kids and I had to cut the cherries in half so that we could all have a taste!

  3. I reckon I would eat them all at once to truly experience a full on almond assault to the senses.

  4. Four today, forty next year, four hundred the year after that (approximately our experience with almonds). My mum's first almond harvest several years ago resulted in 6 nuts. She used bought almonds to make almond flour biscuits and each one was studded with one of her home-grown nuts, which was a bit ridiculous, but in the spirit of celebrating a tree's achievements.

    1. Excellent news Baron. Better prepare the nets :)
I do like the idea of celebrating this harvest in biscuit form though.

  5. I've had a cherry tree since the eighties, at a holiday house, and I've harvested ONE cherry. The king parrots love them.

    1. Haha. Yes, the birds are a real pest. I hate when they take a peck out of fruit, then leave it. Such a waste!
