Garden Share Collective: September

It is really already time again for Garden Share Collective. Time flies. As always many thanks to Lizzie for putting this whole shebang together.


Things have certainly warmed up of late. The last few weeks has seen the first t-shirt weather of the year, along with the first spring blossoms. Those stalwarts of the spring - artichokes and asparagus - have put forth their first albeit meager offerings.

So what's been happening at chez Bek. Well, I got my first chickens.


These are my grandmothers pre-loved chickens, which I am looking after, perhaps permanently, while she moves house and later in the year has surgery. I'm thinking I will get a couple more, as they are not the best layers ever. We will see. No definite plans have been made as yet. For now I'm just enjoying their chooky antics.

Other than that, not a whole lot new is happening. But winter hibernation is now over and lots of new things are on their way.

Planting

Lots has been happening here. I have already planted my tomatoes and now have thinned all the seedlings that germinated to the two strongest. Only the Riesentraube hasn't produced anything. All other varieties have done well.

Just this weekend gone I sowed the first eggplants, capsicums, peppers, squash and pumpkin seeds, which are currently taking up space on my lounge room mantlepiece. I've sown:

Eggplant: Bonica, Long Green, Turkish Orange, Pink White, Black Beauty, Early Long Purple.

Cucumber: Lebanese, Lemon, Mexican Sour Gherkin, Long White, Continental.

Capsicum: Mini Yellow Bell, Orange Glory, Hungarian Sweet Wax, Albatross.

Squash; Jaune et Verte.

Pumpkin: Potimaron.

I'm also trying tomatillos again. I grew them way back in 2009 when I first started gardening here and I am sorry to say I didn't do much at all with the fruits. This year I'm planning some proper mexican food delights, of which I'm sure the tomatillos will enhance.

This is the first early sowings, which will hopefully be followed by successional sowing of much of these later in around October, assuming I get my act together.

Harvesting

Lots of the last winter veg, including kale, broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage.

Just how much broccoli can one person eat. Lots!

Carrots and beetroot have also made appearances on the menu. I need to use these up before they start going to seed in spring.

I have had all of two asparagus spears, both munched in the garden. There is nothing more delightful than a fresh asparagus spear!

I've picked a few peas, and a few self sow lettuces have given me salad greens, and a few early spring onions have been harvested.

And the last of the apples has been eaten.


To do:
  • Nurture young seedlings, including some going out into the greenhouse and some inside to hedge my seedling survival bets.
  • Prepare the various garden beds in both the raised bed veg patch and the front yard for the coming season. This will involved digging in some green manures and laying down of manure and compost.
  • Ensure the weeds do not take over the garden.
  • Try not to count the buds on the peach trees and preempt how many peaches I will be eating in January.

  1. Argh!!! I'm yet to plant any seeds and next weekend is going to be HUGE so it won't be happening then. I need to get my proverbial into gear.

    1. I don't know that I'm going to get produce that much faster, having sown seed early, but only time will tell. That's why I want to try and re-sow seed later and see if it makes much difference.

  2. You are pretty well organised with your planting, I've made a start but I still have some to do, the rest will be direct sown, but it's still early for that yet. I hope to make the most of my new greenhouse this year. Happy gardening x

    1. I try. My level of organisation varies drastically. I'm very jealous when you say greenhouse. I have a small plastic one, but would love a large proper greenhouse or even better, a polytunnel. If only I had the space...

  3. just how much can one person eat of broccoli? hmmm, let me ask my parents - they are dealing with monstrously over-productive bushes of the purple sprouting variety at the moment ,and we all seem to eat buckets every day. good thing brocolli is one of my fave vegies.
    i love those chickens! chickens will be next on my list (shhh, don't tell dad!).

    1. I would also say - a lot. I have had to start getting a bit more creative with it, rather than just cooking it simply (stir fry with garlic and chilli is my default broccoli cooking method) and having it as a side.
      I love chickens too. (And I won't tell your dad :) )

  4. I'm sowing seeds today and tomorrow. It's spring fever I think. Chookies are worth it just for their antics. The eggs are a very nice bonus though. happy gardening.

  5. I need to start thinking about planting some seeds for my summer garden. I'm impressed that you have already grown tomato seedlings. I also love your chooks -- once you have them you'll never want to be without them.

    1. Yes, I find they grow pretty slowly at this time of year and so an early start makes all the difference. The tomato seedlings aren't much - they are only starting to get true leaves.
      I think you are right on the chooks.

  6. Good luck with your tomatillos. That is always the challenge with a new vegetable. You have to figure out how to eat it.

    1. Absolutely true. And figuring out when they are actually ripe and ready to pick. I'm sure I'll be doing some googling to find out more if/when they actually grow and produce.

  7. Thats a good haul of broccoli. Its one of my fav veggies too. You sound like you are growing some pretty amazing eggplants - where do you get your seed from. I am having trouble finding the long light purple asian type. I want to grow them again as they were prolific here unlike the standard purple king.

    1. I was pretty pleased with that haul! It made a nice broccoli carbonara.
      My seed is a collection from Eden seeds, cornucopia seeds, and territorial seeds in the USA (which when I last bought, it was ok to bring in eggplant seeds). I can't recall seeing seed of that type of eggplant, but I didn't buy any eggplant seeds this year, so they may have something for you. Good luck with finding what you are after.

  8. re. re. your tomatillos - I figured mine were ready for harvest when the outer leaves (actually not technically leaves but 2 years of botany subjects at uni fail me) split away from the fruits and start to dry off..... When you get sick of mexican... the green salsa makes an excellent addition to cheese and ham toasties or a topping for poached eggs. (now that you have joined the world of 'gardening with chickens')
