The onions are up...

13 June, 2013

After waiting a few weeks since sowing my onion seed, I was a bit worried that nothing was happening.

But it appears that they have loved the recent rain we've had, as there are millions of onion seedlings coming up.

Some thinning will definitely be in order at some stage.

I love the way seed coats stick to the top part of the seedlings.

Hopefully this is the beginning of a year's worth of onions.

  1. Wow, there are millions! My tiny baby chives look just the same. I am going to watch the progress of the onions with interest, and have a go at planting them next year. How much space are you devoting to a year of onions?

    1. I've always struggled to grow chives from seed for some reason, even when my chives produce seed it I've sown it and nothing seems to come up. Ah well. On the space question, I'd say maybe 5-6 square meters all up is my onion growing space. I'm hoping with some intensive growing I'll get lots from that space.

  2. They're self seeding at our house, little patches of leeks, spring onions, red onions to separate. Just in time for the shortest day of the year, they know what they're doing.

    1. Ah, I didn't know the day length influenced onion seed germination. Or is it just timely as day length influences how they grow? I'd love any more info. I've had leeks self seed, but not onions so far. You've inspired me to let some go to seed for future onion production. Cheers!

  3. I'm really struggling to get any onions (other than spring onions) to germinate this year. I think I'll just have to buy seedlings as I have no idea why they aren't working but they just refuse to come up.

    1. Well, I can't give you any advice as I have no idea why mine are up now, they just are... is old seed a possibility? Or maybe they're just pretending and will come up shortly. Who knows.
