Let there be light...

30 May, 2013

Picking garden produce when I got home from work after a long day has been slightly more problematic lately. Because it's already pitch dark when I get home.

How to overcome this problem? A torch was the obvious solution, but I didn't have one.

I finally bought one at the supermarket on the way home from work.

Now I can finally get back into picking food for dinner straight from the garden.

I guess you could say this produce is courtesy of the supermarket. But not really.

Do you have any tricks for getting around picking in the dark?

  1. My back yard courtyard is lit by the outside light, so I try to grow lettuce and greens out there where I can see them. Also have lemons in pots there. But everywhere else is too muddy to go out in my ugg boots, so I have to plan dinner while it is still light!
Better than a hand held torch for harvesting though - is the head torch. Brilliant out in the dark garden(if you are not wearing ugg boots), because you have both hands free.

    1. I wish I had thought of that when siting my main veg patch! I had thought about the head torch, but don't know where I can get my hands on one. Maybe I'll end up making my own...

    2. All the outdoorsy camping shops have them. If you do end up strapping a torch to your beanie, that would definitely be worth a photo..

  2. Is it dark before you go to work? Stuff picked first thing in the morning when the plant is at its maximum moisture content usually has as much 'snap' and freshness as stuff picked later in the day. Commercial growers try to start picking early and finish early.

    1. Ah, I didn't know that. It would take a bit of organisation on my part (not my strong suit until my second cup of coffee) but I might be able to squeeze it in before I leave for work. Thanks!

  3. I have some solar garden lights placed in the patch. They are great but I don't really have enough for the patch size. I mostly need a torch in addition to the solar garden lights. Your produce looks a little spooky by torch light.

    You are already picking broccoli!

    1. Hmm, good to know they aren't that powerful as I was thinking of getting those. I know - yay broccoli!

  4. I sometimes harvest a bit extra this time of year and put it in he fridge, even though I'm home during the day. I pick a bigger harvest and put it in the crisper, or some herbs in a jar, much more appealing to use than going out in the rain. Maybe you could do that on the weekend - your weekly garden shop.

    1. I've tried weekend pickings, but I tend to forget what I've got in the criper, or it's not at its best and I feel a bit unmotivated to cook it. And I hate wasting garden produce. But the jar idea sounds good. Cheers!
