I spy with my little eye, something beginning with 'S'...

19 April, 2012

Pottering around the garden yesterday when I got home I came a across a suprise.

So I looked a bit closer...

Can you see what I saw?...

It was saffron!!! My first saffron crocus has flowered!

I believe I squealed like a little girl with delight.

So I have picked the delicate stamens which are so rightly famous for the flavour and colour they impart to rice-y dishes.

All I need now is a few more and I will have saffron pilaf!

  1. How did you get it to flower?! I've had one lot of saffron crocuses for over a year now and although I get the grass-like leaves, it has yet to flower. Can you give me any tips??

  2. They have only flowered once, in the first year I grew them. I think they were good size bulbs, and since then I've been trying to get them to grow to a good size again so they will flower. Sadly the first lot died, so I've since had to rebuy which has set the timeline back. Fingers crossed next year!
